Performers: Benjamin Pionnier (conductor), HK Sinfonietta, Opera HK Chorus
Rating: *** (3 out of 5)
Charles Gounod’s Faust is one of the most frequently performed operas
both within and without France. Its popularity is reflected by the numerous
references to it in literature, from Edith Wharton’s The Age of Innocence to
Anton Chekhov’s The Seagull, to The Adventures of Tintin, in which rotund
soprano Bianca Castafiore is known to shatter glass with a piercing rendition
of the famous Jewel Song. It is therefore little surprise that the opera was
picked for this year’s Le French May Arts Festival.
