Performers: Kingman Lo (director), Opera Society of HK, HK Virtuosi
Rating: *** (3 out of 5)
In the last month of 2014,
the Opera Society of Hong Kong teamed up with Hong Kong Virtuosi to stage four
performances of Puccini’s Turandot. This run of the opera was more
unusual than most – the matinees on December 13th and 14th featured an alternate
ending written in 2001 by contemporary Italian composer Luciano Berio. Opera
lovers who are accustomed to the original ending by Franco Alfano – who
completed Puccini’s unfinished score after his untimely death – were eager to
find out how Berio’s new finale measured up.
